Shingle Calculator

Use this Shingle Calculator to convert known roof surface area into roofing squares and whole shingle bundles. Adjust waste, bundles per square and optional bundle price to match your roofing product and project.

Roofing material estimator

Shingle Calculator

Convert known roof area into roofing squares, bundle quantity and optional material cost. Waste and bundles-per-square are editable so the calculation can match the product and project.

1

Enter roof area and product assumptions

Start with the roof surface area—not the horizontal building footprint. Then set waste, bundles per square and optional bundle price.

Roof area
Waste allowance

Editable planning allowance. Roof complexity and product instructions may justify a different value.

Bundles per roofing square

Many products are packaged around three bundles per square, but bundle coverage varies. Enter the value for the product you are using.

Price per bundle Optional
Product note: bundle coverage, exposure, starter, ridge/hip cap, underlayment and accessory requirements vary by roofing system. Use the actual product literature and project requirements when ordering.
2

Your shingle estimate

Review waste-adjusted area, roofing squares, rounded bundle quantity and optional bundle cost.

Transparent calculation

How the shingle estimate is calculated

The calculator adds the selected waste allowance to the known roof surface area, converts the result to roofing squares, then multiplies by the bundles-per-square value you provide.

01Waste-adjusted arearoof area × (1 + waste %)
02Roofing squaresadjusted ft² ÷ 100
03Raw bundlessquares × bundles per square
04Order bundlesround raw bundles up
05Coverage per bundle100 ÷ bundles per square
06Bundle costwhole bundles × price

Important: this estimates field shingles from area and packaging assumptions. It does not automatically add starter strips, ridge/hip caps, underlayment, flashing, nails, ventilation components or project-specific accessories.

Step by step

How to use the Shingle Calculator

Enter the total sloped roof surface area. If you only have building dimensions and pitch, use the Roof Area Calculator first. Then choose waste, enter the bundle packaging for your product and optionally add a price per bundle.

  1. Enter roof area. Use the actual sloped roof surface, not the horizontal footprint.
  2. Set a waste allowance. Use a project-specific percentage based on roof complexity, layout and product guidance.
  3. Confirm bundles per square. Do not assume every shingle product uses the same package coverage.
  4. Add price if useful. The calculator can estimate bundle-only material cost.
  5. Round ordering quantities up. The calculator automatically returns whole bundles.

Read your result

What each shingle result means

Base roof area

The sloped surface area you entered before waste.

Area with waste

The roof area increased by the selected planning allowance.

Roofing squares

The waste-adjusted area expressed in 100-square-foot roofing units.

Bundles required

The bundle quantity rounded up to a whole package using your bundles-per-square input.

Coverage per bundle

The implied field coverage from the bundles-per-square value you entered.

Estimated bundle cost

Whole bundle quantity multiplied by your optional price. Accessories and labor are not included.

Worked example

Example: 1,800 ft² roof with 10% waste

For a roof surface of 1,800 ft², a 10% waste allowance creates 1,980 ft² of planning area, or 19.8 roofing squares. At 3 bundles per square, that is 59.4 bundles, so the whole-package order quantity rounds up to 60 bundles.

1Adjusted area1,800 × 1.10 = 1,980 ft²
2Squares1,980 ÷ 100 = 19.8
3Raw bundles19.8 × 3 = 59.4
4Order quantityceil(59.4) = 60 bundles

Ordering guidance

Shingle estimating tips

  • Use the exact bundle coverage or bundles-per-square information for the selected product.
  • Separate field shingles from starter, ridge/hip cap and specialty accessories.
  • Increase planning allowance when cuts, valleys, hips or roof complexity create additional waste.
  • Confirm color/lot availability and package quantities before final ordering.
  • Use manufacturer installation instructions for product-specific requirements.

Know the limits

Assumptions and limitations

The calculator assumes the area you enter is the roof surface that needs field shingles. It uses your waste percentage and bundles-per-square value rather than claiming one packaging standard applies to every product.

The result is not a complete roofing bill of materials. Starter, ridge and hip cap, underlayment, ice/water protection, flashing, ventilation, fasteners, drip edge and other components must be estimated separately according to the roof design and product system.

Common questions

Shingle Calculator FAQ

How many square feet are in a roofing square?

One US roofing square represents 100 square feet of roof surface.

Why does the calculator ask for bundles per square?

Bundle coverage varies by product. Making the value editable is safer than assuming every product uses the same package count.

Why does the bundle quantity round up?

Shingles are purchased in whole bundles, so a fractional calculated bundle must be rounded up for ordering.

Does this include ridge cap or starter shingles?

No. The bundle result is a field-shingle estimate based on the packaging value you enter. Specialty components should be estimated separately.

Does waste include valleys and hips?

The calculator applies a single percentage to the field area. Choose a percentage that reflects the actual roof complexity and installation plan.

Can I enter square meters?

Yes. Metric roof area is converted internally so the result can still report US roofing squares and bundle quantities.
