Use this Deck Material Calculator to estimate decking, joist-line footage, perimeter framing, user-planned beam and post quantities, and approximate decking fasteners from your deck dimensions and layout assumptions.
Describe the deck and material assumptions
Enter the deck footprint first, then the decking and framing-layout assumptions you want converted into quantities.
Your material takeoff
Use the breakdown as an estimating worksheet, then verify actual product lengths, cuts and structural plans.
Material planning
How to use the Deck Material Calculator
This calculator is designed for a broader material takeoff than the flagship Deck Calculator. It starts with a rectangular deck footprint, calculates parallel decking courses, then converts your entered joist, beam, post and fastener assumptions into visible quantities.
- Measure the finished deck footprint. Enter the overall length and width of the rectangular deck surface.
- Describe the decking. Use actual face width, installation gap and the stock board length you expect to buy.
- Choose board direction. The calculator treats joist lines as perpendicular to the decking.
- Enter your framing-layout assumptions. Joist spacing, beam lines and post spacing are quantities you supply—not structural recommendations from the tool.
- Set waste and fastener assumptions. Adjust them for your product, layout and installation method.
- Verify the shopping list. Check available stock lengths, product instructions, cut layout and the structural plan before purchasing.

It does not optimize individual cut lengths, stagger joints, account for picture framing or guarantee that every offcut is reusable.
Worked example
Example: materials for a 16 ft × 12 ft deck
For a 16 ft × 12 ft rectangular deck, use 5½ in decking, a ⅛ in gap, 16 ft stock boards, boards running along the 16 ft length, 16 in entered joist spacing, 10% decking waste and 2 decking fasteners per board/joist intersection.
16 × 12 = 192 ft²26 rows416 lf × 1.10 = 457.6 lf → 29 × 16-ft boards26 rows × 13 joist lines × 2 = 676The same geometry produces approximately 156 linear ft of joist lines and 56 linear ft of perimeter. Those are takeoff quantities, not lumber-sizing instructions.
Better estimates
What to measure before buying deck materials
- Confirm the finished deck dimensions and any openings or projections that make the shape non-rectangular.
- Use the decking manufacturer’s actual profile width and installation gap.
- Confirm available board lengths before relying on an aggregate stock-board estimate.
- Increase waste for diagonal boards, picture-frame borders, breaker boards and complicated cut patterns.
- Use a verified framing plan for joist spacing, beam lines, posts and footings rather than treating the calculator defaults as design recommendations.
Know the limits
Assumptions and structural limitations
This tool assumes a rectangular deck with straight parallel decking. It does not automatically subtract stair openings, posts through the deck, hot-tub openings, built-ins or other interruptions. It also does not add fascia, picture-frame borders, blocking, hardware, ledger material or stair material unless those are handled separately.
Joist-line, beam and post quantities are generated only from the spacing and line counts you enter. The calculator does not select member sizes, allowable spans, footing dimensions, connection details, fastener types or load capacities. Verify structural details, product instructions and locally applicable requirements before construction.
Common questions
Deck Material Calculator FAQ
What materials does this calculator estimate?
It estimates decking stock quantity, joist-line footage, perimeter/rim length, optional user-planned beam and post quantities and an approximate decking-fastener count. It is not a complete structural bill of materials.
Why can the purchased board count differ from the final layout?
The calculator divides aggregate waste-adjusted decking length by stock-board length. Real layouts can need additional boards because of joints, cut locations, borders, unusable offcuts or stock-length restrictions.
Does the joist quantity tell me what joist spacing to use?
No. It only converts the spacing you enter into a geometric line count. Allowable joist spacing depends on the actual decking and framing system.
How are decking fasteners estimated?
The calculator multiplies deck-board rows by joist lines and by your editable fasteners-per-intersection assumption. Hidden-fastener systems and manufacturer requirements can differ.
Does it calculate concrete footings?
No. Post-location count is only shown when you enter planned beam lines and post spacing. Footing diameter, depth, reinforcement and concrete volume are project-specific structural/site decisions.
Is the optional cost a full project price?
No. It multiplies only the approximate stock decking-board quantity by the price you enter per board.
