Roofing

Roofing Calculators for Pitch, Rafters, Area & Shingles

Use this collection to move from roof geometry to material planning: convert pitch and slope, calculate straight-line rafter geometry, estimate roof surface area, then translate area into roofing material quantities.

Five calculators, five roofing planning questions

Roof terminology

The measurements these calculators use

Roof run

The horizontal distance used with rise to describe the roof slope or one side of a simple roof geometry.

Roof rise

The vertical change corresponding to the selected horizontal run.

Pitch

A rise-per-run ratio. In common US notation, 6:12 means 6 units of rise for 12 units of horizontal run.

Roof angle

The same roof slope expressed as degrees above horizontal.

Slope factor

The multiplier that converts horizontal run or plan area into the corresponding sloped geometry for a simple plane.

Roofing square

A material-estimating unit equal to 100 square feet of roof area. Packaging and coverage still depend on the roofing product.

A simple planning sequence

How the roofing tools fit together

1Establish pitch

Measure or convert roof rise/run so you know the slope of the roof plane.

2Calculate geometry

Use pitch with run/span to estimate rafter geometry and sloped roof area.

3Estimate materials

Translate the roof area into shingles, bundles, roofing squares and waste allowances.

Why separate calculators?

One strong page per distinct roofing calculation intent

BuildCalcForge does not create separate pages for trivial variations such as “roof pitch to degrees calculator” when the same conversion belongs inside the Roof Pitch Calculator. Separate pages exist where the user is solving a materially different task: rafter geometry, roof area, roofing material quantity or shed-roof planning.

This keeps the cluster useful, reduces duplicated content and gives each calculator a clear purpose in the larger roof-planning workflow.

Planning reference

Roof geometry is only one part of a roofing project

Pitch, run, rise, rafter length and roof area are geometric quantities. They do not by themselves determine structural adequacy, allowable rafter span, roof-covering suitability, underlayment, flashing, fastening, ventilation, drainage details, snow/wind loading or locally adopted code requirements.

Use these tools to organize measurements and estimate quantities, then verify project-specific structural, manufacturer and local requirements before construction or material purchase.

Common questions

Roofing Calculators FAQ

Which roofing calculator should I use first?

Start with the Roof Pitch Calculator if you need to establish or convert the slope. Then use Rafter Length or Roof Area depending on whether your next question is geometry or surface area.

Are roof pitch and roof slope the same thing?

They describe the same general roof inclination but can be expressed differently, such as x:12 pitch, degrees, percent slope or a rise/run ratio.

Does the Rafter Length Calculator size the lumber?

No. It calculates straight-line geometry. Structural sizing depends on loads, species/grade, spacing, span, support conditions and applicable requirements.

Why is the Shingle Calculator separate from Roof Area?

Roof Area focuses on geometry. Shingle estimating adds packaging, roofing-square and waste assumptions that are specific to material quantity planning.
